Bedroom Lights On Wall
Keith Scott Morton
I want to paint our large living room a dark brown color and cover the furniture in different shades of white. However, I'm afraid the walls may be too dark with the dark wood floor -- even though it gets lots of light. We have a great view of the woods. Is it okay not to hang any window treatments?

Dear Janet,
When dark walls surround light furnishings the contrast is striking and sophisticated. The rich walls soothe, and the white furniture refreshes. Of course, that doesn't mean a great old mahogany chest or walnut table won't fit, too. Not every piece has to contrast; some can just blend in.
Window treatments may or may not be part of the plan; it's really a matter of preference and privacy. Keep in mind, however, that although blue skies and greenery are wonderful to look at while the sun shines, once dusk passes everything outside is just plain black, which can make the room feel cold. You might think about softening the windows with a treatment that is loose and simple; long white cotton sheers or flaxen linen panels would work well.
You may also find that the space deserves a rug. While there is nothing like beautiful wood floors, a rug will ground your furniture and add warmth to the room. Either a natural fiber rug in a color that is significantly lighter than your walls -- but a nice contrast to the white furniture -- or a modern high pile or loop carpet that is really textural and sculptural would look great. (Check out www.meridameridian.com for some examples.) Many people like Oriental-style carpets, which could also work.
Using mirror, glass or metal in your decor is another way to lighten up your living room. Whether it's mirrored furniture, a large wall mirror, a collection of smaller mirrors or a chandelier with pretty crystals, reflective surfaces always lighten and brighten. Using glass or a clear material keeps the space from feeling heavy. Consider a glass-topped coffee table, for example. Matte brass or nickel accents are another simple way to add some shine. Change the hardware on an existing piece, find a great metallic standing lamp or place a large aluminum bowl in the center of a table. You could also introduce a metal table or bench.
Before you decide which of these personal touches will make the space feel like your own, your first step should be to choose your paint color. Buy a sample container to brush on so you can test the color for a few days. I really like Benjamin Moore's Davenport Tan (which reminds me of a cup of Starbucks with a smidge of half-and-half) with semigloss white on the ceiling and trim. After you paint and upholster or slipcover your furnishings, you'll be in a better position to determine what your room needs.
